Have you been wondering what I did while I waited to pick back up my photography passion? Well, it has been a quite a minute since I blogged a photoshoot; it takes a while to get settled in to a new state AND move an LLC. But you'd better believe I purposefully did NOT take a break from my creative endeavors. When it was too hot outside for anyone to want a photoshoot, I took a class to improve my eye for photographic composition (super interesting, so more on this later!). Meanwhile, I was also waiting for Texas and Tennessee to do all the paperwork to transfer my business rights (super not-interesting, so no more on this later!).
The class on composition taught me to "see" things that I had "never seen" before. Of course, I knew about the rule of thirds, but I did NOT know about Golden Triangles. I knew it usually flatters my subject when I'm a bit above them, shooting down, but I did not know when and how to break that rule well (hard concept for rule-followers like me). I knew what negative space is, but I did not know how to make the negative space purposefully serve my subject. After I finished the online course, I knew I had to practice! So thanks to a friend who was willing to model, I got excited to shoot at Memphis Botanic Gardens (gorgeous!)!!! Drum roll please...
Womp womp, Memphis Botanic Gardens hadn't updated some information online and actually closed within 23 minutes of our arrival. You'll see here that I got in a few shots before we had to clear out. I wasn't too worried, because another garden nearby, the Dixon, was supposed to be open through the end of golden hour, so we hopped over there.
Then womp womp, The Dixon had a private event scheduled and closed their gates to the public within three minutes of our arrival. So in order not to lose time or precious daylight, we crossed the street to what I think was the side of a golf course. I didn't have the assistance of bridges and pergolas and arches and pathways and landscaped areas, etc., so I had to find patterns and shapes in nature, and sometimes even use my subject for her own lead-lines, etc.! I'm definitely still learning, but since I plan to be a lifelong learner, that's fine by me!
