One big goal, one big dream

When I launched Emily Joy Photography in 2022, I had one big goal and one big dream for my business. My big goal was for photography to be a creative outlet, a little breather from all the routine activities I perform as a mother to eight. Checked that box!

My big dream was to break into the wedding market, and that dream has come true!!! I LOOOOOOVE being a wedding photographer (and yes, I still do plenty of family sessions, maternity, etc.)! I had one accessory to my wedding-photographer dream, specifically, to shoot at least one wedding at the Zion Hill Baptist Church renovation. But. with time running down on my time left here in Nacogdoches, Texas, I decided to give my dream a little help! I found a perfect model, made friends with a wedding dress boutique, contacted my favorite florist, and looped in a second shooter (all tagged below!).

And I was right! This is a dream come true venue! This shoot stretched my artistic abilities, because I almost never shoot indoors and I’m a committed people-centered photographer, so I seldom feature architecture! I got to broaden my horizons a little bit, and I’m thrilled to show you portraits of what I think is the dreamiest new wedding venue in all of East Texas!

Most people who follow my photography journey know that I’m about to make a huge pivot. I’m moving my family and my business from small-town Texas to the phenomenal city of Memphis, Tennessee. Several friends have asked me if I plan to continue Emily Joy Photography in Memphis, and the answer is a resounding YES! And do I still want to shoot a wedding at ZHBC? Yes, oh yes! I'd waive my travel fee and come back to shoot it!!!

Looking back and looking forward, I feel thankfulness and excitement (and, yes, some nervousness). But, when I have a goal or a dream, I generally stick with it! And this shoot in particular reminded me that going after goals and dreams is worth it. And sometimes I'll need to get a little creative to make some dreams come true.
